In plenty of politically-themed movies and books where lawyers are the big shots, we almost always see someone trailing behind them or running around a law firm. These people are called paralegals. These people from the behind the scenes are paralegals. So what is a paralegal? Generally, a paralegal is someone who lends a hand to a lawyer. It is also this relationship to the world of law that they are sometimes called legal assistants.
The paralegal profession plays varying roles in different countries. In the United States, they can be associated to personal assistants and are not permitted by law to practice legal activities. Ontario, Canada on the other hand, they can perform some legal work once they have their paralegal certification. They are also being governed by the same laws and regulations of a lawyer. In the United Kingdom, a paralegal is basically a non-lawyer who does legal work regardless for who he or she is doing it for.
We have now defined what a paralegal is, so let us then answer the question of what does paralegal do? In a nutshell, they are the people who will assist the lawyer in all legal works. They are the people who work behind the scene. They do the paper work, in which they will do plenty of research about a certain case and gather that information in order to help win a trial. Many lawyers prefer paralegals to do this because paralegals are trained to do research in the same way as lawyers do. They also keep track the lawyer's schedule.
Paralegals also perform interviews with clients and other important people in order to gather more information in order to make a break in the case and even win it. In the court, the paralegal is the person who will be submitting the forms and applications to the court and also organizes all the files. The bulk of it all, paralegals are the ones who will do plenty of work in the preparation of a trial.
Do not get into your mind that a paralegal job is like of a secretary because there are some secretarial responsibilities, that is not their sole purpose. Many people want to have a job like this because it pays well and also you become part of a team where you can also help in delivering the hand of justice to those who has been wronged. This is the biggest satisfaction for any paralegal. They play such an important role that without them, lawyers would have to clamor all over the place to gather data, research and risk losing time talking to the clients about their case.
As the old saying goes, "Behind a successful man is a great woman". In this line of thought, behind the wins of a lawyer is a great paralegal. Hence, paralegals are very important in the legal system especially when it comes to help a lawyer deliver the strong arm of the law.
