"Why do you collect books and underline best life quotes?" asked my wife, referring to a lifelong habit of picking up books she or I have found over the years. I had never really thought about the reason for this habit. It was just something I always did, enjoyed and passed time.
After thinking about that question for a little while I realized the important affects this practice has had on my life and many of the career and life choices I have made throughout the years. I constantly find myself seeking inspiration from all available resources and quotes from past leaders, writers and other famous people. It fills a major portion of seeking of knowledge.
I didn't realize how much of my decision making was influenced by those quotes. From motivation to persevere even through the darkest and most difficult of times to a simple and consistent reminder to make good and honest decisions every day in every way.
We have all been exposed to these messages from the earliest of days. Many fairy tales convey the same messages to books written for the contemporary adult. The beauty of a truly time tested quote for the age is summarizing a significant message or idea in a short, catchy and fluent fashion.
It is not coincidence that a majority of quotes are written, spoken or in some way conveyed throughout history by some of the truly remarkable people in history. From John F. Kennedy, to Winston Churchill, state leaders are looked to for inspiration in times of national despair such as war or economic turmoil. A truly epic quote can stir a nation.
I often read those quotes for inspiration in life, writing or family life. Authors like Mark Twain or a poet such as Maya Angelou have such an expressive and visual way with their words that a few of their quotes stick with me and are called upon quite often as I look back and think about it.
As I drifted off mentally thinking about the impact of quotes and brain storming some of the best quotes I could recall while sitting at my desk, I realized how often I called upon my collection of books in very sub conscious ways at times when I just needed a mental jolt per se. Reading these famous quotes from the past stirs the imagination thinking about what inspiration these people encountered to bring about such an simple, eloquent piece of work. I will often pick up a book of quotes when I find myself beaten down or to jump start a slow day.
I recently found a website that has done the leg work of collecting the best life quotes. I would suggest looking it up to save you some time of collecting books like I did.
