Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said the plane was carrying 37 passengers and eight crew, and all but two people were immediately killed in the crash. Those two were a flight attendant and player Alexander Galimov, who was in a grave condition with burns over 80 percent of his body. There were conflicting reports about Galimov's survival. The fate of the flight attendant, Alexander Sizov, was not immediately known. ITAR-TASS reported that the plane collided with a beacon antenna upon takeoff after being unable to gain safe altitude and that it crashed about 500 yards from the runway near the Volga River.

More than 2,000 mourning fans wearing jerseys and scarves and waving team flags gathered in the evening outside Yaroslavl Lokomotiv's stadium to pay their respects. Riot police were also present as fans chanted sport songs in memory of the athletes.

The crash of the Yak-42 aircraft , whose victims included foreign stars playing for the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL)team Lokomotiv, plunged the sports world into grief and marred a showcase political forum featuring President Dmitry Medvedev.

Russian sports and tourism minister Vitaly Mutko also said that his ministry will take all necessary measures to restore a top flight hockey team in Yaroslavl.
Lokomotiv Yaroslavl were scheduled to start their new KHL season tomorrow with a match at Minsk against local side Dynamo.
The club, which was founded in 1959, won the Russian title in 1997, 2002 and 2003, clinching the league's silver medal in 2008 and 2009.
Yaroslavl also won bronze medals of the Russian league in 1998, 1999, 2005 and 2011.

The Emergency Ministry said Czech players Josef Vasicek, Karel Rachunek and Jan Marek, Latvian defenceman Karlis Skrastins and defenceman Ruslan Salehi of Belarus were among those killed.
