Some of the first questions you ask yourself before travelling to Greece are: What's the weather going to be like? Will it rain on my holiday? All of the Greek islands enjoy a warm and sunny Mediterranean climate. The summers are hot and dry with a brilliant light and clear.
Expect good weather in Greece!
skies, it rarely rains in the summer on the Greek islands. The average temperatures are around +27, tempered only by the northern meltemi winds which can blow fiercely for days at a time in August. Many people prefer to travel in the spring when the sun is not as strong and the wild flowers are in bloom. Winters are generally mild but some islands can have snow and plenty of rain.
The high season
The summer season in the Greek islands runs from May to October with July and August being the hottest with temperatures reaching +35 and above in some places. The UV-Index can reach up to 10 on some islands during July and August, so do check it out before you go, apply sun screen and wear a hat.
The weather can be unpredictable out of season. If you are planning an early or late holiday think about the southerly islands such as Crete and Rhodes where the weather will generally be more settled.
Once the weather does settle - from late May to mid-September - it is almost guaranteed to be hot, bright and clear. The average sea temperatures are +27? C in July. From late June to early August some islands suffer from the brisk meltemi wind which, though it makes the air fresh, it can make sunbathing on the northern shores uncomfortable.
Winter in Greece
In winter the low-pressure systems move in from the Atlantic, bringing rain while cold winds blow in from the Balkans. The same low-pressure systems draw warmer winds from the south so there can be a marked difference in winter temperatures between the north and south islands. The Ionian Islands and the western mountains get most of the rain; often three times that in the sheltered east. Thunder and lightning occur mainly in the winter season on the Greek islands.
By late October, ferry service and flights are cut back and may facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But with the cooler weather around the corner, Athens and Greece mainland is the place to go.
Timing your Greek island holiday can be tricky and much depends on what you plan to do when you get there. July and August is not a good time if you plan to do any sightseeing or hiking. On the other hand, if you are seeking sun and fun, July and August is perfect for you
The meltemi
The meltemi is a strong wind that scours the islands throughout July - August. It results from a high pressure over the Balkans and low pressure over Turkey bringing strong, north east winds. It occurs mainly during the summer with July and August the worst affected months, but springs up occasionally in May and October. Northern islands are less affected than those in the south which can suffer from summer gales, particularly bad on north facing beaches. Ferry sailings and boat trips can be cancelled, sunbathing can be unpleasant and the night sleep disturbed.
